Before you order

Duties and tariffs, in plain English

Up to four layers of charges can land on an imported building product. We check every one with a licensed customs broker before you see a price, and we clear customs ourselves, so you never deal with the border.

Last checked October 8, 2026

  1. 1

    Customs duty and GST

Every product has a tariff classification (an HS code) with its own duty rate. GST is charged at the border on top.

    Applies to

    Everything.

  2. 2

Surtaxes on steel and aluminum products

Canada applies additional surtaxes of up to 25% on certain steel and aluminum products depending on where they were made.

    Applies to

Listed steel and aluminum goods from affected origins. Some short-supply products have temporary relief.

  3. 3

    Surtaxes on metal content

A further surtax can apply to goods made with steel or aluminum melted or smelted in certain countries, unless origin certificates prove otherwise. It stacks on top of duty, anti-dumping and GST.

    Applies to

Steel doors, hardware and anything else with affected metal content. Small shipments of affected goods are exempt.

  4. 4

    Anti-dumping duty on aluminum extrusions

Anti-dumping and countervailing duties apply to aluminum extrusions from some origins, and are renewed periodically by Canada's trade tribunal.

    Applies to

Aluminum profiles, which can include aluminum window and door frames.

What this means for your order

  • We quote uPVC and fibreglass windows by default. Aluminum-framed windows can pick up both surtax and anti-dumping duty, which can erase the savings.
  • Factories that use steel must give us mill certificates showing where the metal was melted. We collect them before your order ships.
  • Your quote marks each charge as fixed or estimated. The customs broker’s entry is the final word.

Who is the importer?

LUSSO is. We clear customs on our own account, through our licensed broker, and your order arrives at our warehouse with duty and GST already paid. You don’t need a business number, a CBSA account or any dealings with the border, whether you’re a homeowner or a builder.

Rules change

Surtaxes are reviewed and relief orders expire. If something changes between your quote and your shipment, we tell you before the balance is paid.
